NEB|LAB Eco² Schools

By adopting the Open Schooling concept, five pilot sites will create replicable climate action plans, transforming schools into community innovation hubs. The project will raise citizen awareness, promote sustainability education, and foster efficient, eco-friendly energy use.

About

Between 2023 and 2025, the project will showcase how educational buildings can serve as catalysts for the New European Bauhaus. The aim is to propose methods for learning and integrating these topics effectively into the curriculum. It will develop and deliver a pathway for schools to become physical centers of education and knowledge. Additionally, the project will re-examine the relationship between schools and their local communities, positioning them as hubs of innovation for the green transition and sustainable development through co-design and Living Labs (LLs).

The project is being rolled out on 5 pilot sites with 5 different types of buildings in 5 different geographical and climatic situations:

  • Ellinogermaniki Agogi, a 3-level large private school (Greece)
  • SSHL - Sigtunaskolan Humanistiska Läroverket; an international boarding school (Sweden)
  • UCC university college of cork (Ireland)
  • Ciência Viva science center (Portugal)
  • eco2-campus  Microville durable (France)

Our approach

The process will be guided and supported by the NEBLAB Chamber of Quality. This innovative partnership scheme brings together unique expertise (including architects and landscape designers, technology and solutions providers, financial bodies, and local stakeholders).

We aim to support the five pilot sites in creating their green action plan, road map, and implementation plans based on a paradigm shift. The aim is not to renovate buildings as before but rather to adopt a co-design approach involving users and local stakeholders.

We have set up 4 test activities to be tried out on the five pilot sites so that we can experiment quickly and concretely with a view to continuous improvement:

    • How can we create a learning-action community around building renovation?
    • How can we document the initial situation?
    • How do you set up constant reporting?
    • How can we move from Proof Of Concept to First Action?
